| BACKGROUND |
| Ijesaland lies in the Yoruba speaking country of South-Western Nigerian, around the upper reaches of the Osun. Shasha, and Oni rivers which flow South and Southwest to the Lagos Lagoon some hundred miles away. It is undulating country, much of it lying around 1,200 feet above sea level. But rising from 800 feet in the forest of the Oni Valley in the South to around 1,700 feet in the hill around Imesi-Ile to the North and well over 200 feet in the spectacular ridge which today form its eastern boundary with Ekiti.
Ilesa West Local Government has its headquarters at Ereja Square, Ilesa which is purely an urban centre. The secretariat is used to be the headquarters of Ijesa Division. The Local Government was carved out of the old Ilesa Local Government, which was split into two in November, 1996 following the creation of more Local Government areas in Nigeria. The newly created councils then were Ilesa East and Ilesa West Local Governments.
The Local Government is bounded by Atakunmosa West, Osu; Obokun Local Government, Ibokun; Ilesa East Local Government, and Oriade Local Government, Ijebu-Jesa.
The area covers an estimated landmass of about 113 square kilometers with rivers like Adeti, Oora and Oromu.
. According to the population census of 1991, number of inhabitants of Ilesa East and West is put at 139,445. |
GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURE:-
The annual mean temperature of the Local Government is about 850F while the annual mean rainfall is about 600C. The area is interspread with hills it is relatively plain in contradiction to the neighbouring Ilesa East Local Government
